Spring is almost here and that means warmer weather. The trees are budding, flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping, and the humans begin to emerge from there dwellings. As summer gets closer, the urge to connect with nature increases. But is that enough to keep us healthy in general?

According to a Harvard Health Letter, the average American spends 90% of their lives indoors. Wowser! That’s a lot of time! The little bit of time we do get outside might be cut short due to uncomfortable temperatures, mosquitoes or other biting critters, or poor air quality. That makes me wonder just how spoiled we are.

I’m a lover of the outdoors, but I understand there are those who are perfectly fine if the sun never touches their skin. To encourage as many people as possible to enjoy the world around them and connect with Mother Nature on a level they never have, I’ve listed some of the many benefits of going outside.

  1. Vitamin D production happens. This is a very important vitamin, as it helps protect against many diseases, including cancer, type 1 diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. It is important for the regulation of calcium and phosphorus absorption. That means healthy teeth and bones, too. All you need is fifteen minutes of direct sunlight on your arms and legs a few times a week in the summer months to produce enough vitamin D. Of course, you’ll need to wait to put the sunscreen on, because it blocks the UVB rays that trigger the production.
  2. In children with ADHD, it seemed to help the concentrate more after being outside, particularly at a park as opposed to a residential area. If you’re interested in more information on ADHD and some things that can be done to improve concentration, please see this article.
  3. You’ll get more exercise, which we already know improves our mood and, in some cases, has cured depression, not to mention the slew of other health benefits. This leads me to my last, but not least reason to get off the couch and get your butt outside.
  4. Happiness! You, whether you want to believe it or not, are happier when you spend time outside. The sun light brightens your day in ways that go beyond just making it easier to see stuff. There’s a reason Super Man goes to the sun for energy. It makes you feel good, which in turn, gives you energy. So, go get moving and soak up some rays!
